China Custom CNC Milling and Turning: How Engineers Vet an Exporter

This page is for design engineers and sourcing staff who need to qualify a China custom CNC milling and turning supplier before releasing a drawing package. It covers what to ask, which numbers matter, and where an exporter usually falls short.

Machine capability

Read the Machine List, Not the Brochure

The first filter for any China custom CNC milling supplier is the machine list. A table with model, axis count, spindle hours, and working travel tells you more than any capability statement. When a shop lists only a total machine count, you learn very little. The mix matters more than the number.

Five-axis work removes setups, and every removed setup removes a source of positional error. On a bracket with features on four faces, moving from three setups to one can hold true position that a three-axis route cannot repeat. GreatLight runs 16 simultaneous 5-axis machining centers, 12 four-axis mills, 27 three-axis machines, and 16 mill-turn centers. Maximum processing size reaches 4,000 mm, and a Ø400 mm rotary table handles round work that would otherwise need a lathe.

Travel envelopes separate the shops that can take your part from those that cannot. Large work fits 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm. Medium parts run on 750 × 1,150 × 550 mm or 600 × 600 × 600 mm machines. Compact and high-mix work runs on 500 × 500 × 450 mm and 500 × 310 × 200 mm platforms. Send the bounding box with the RFQ and the answer on feasibility comes back fast.

Tolerance and inspection

What ±0.005 mm Actually Requires

Tolerance claims are easy to print and hard to hold. On a China custom CNC milling program, ±0.005 mm is realistic on specific features, not on the whole part. It depends on feature size, material, wall thickness, and how the part is held. A thin aluminium wall will move under clamping load no matter how good the machine is.

Repeatability is the number that decides your batch. A shop that hits tolerance on part one but drifts on part 400 costs you a sorting operation. GreatLight reports a 99.99% qualification rate, with 100% inspection before shipment. That covers raw material check, in-process monitoring, and final inspection. Inspection reports come on request, and you should request them on the first order, not the third.

Surface finish follows the same logic. As-machined surfaces sit at Ra 1.6–3.2 μm. A high-quality finish lands at Ra 0.8–1.6 μm. Fine finishing reaches Ra 0.2–0.8 μm, and it costs time because it means slower passes and often a second operation. Specify finish only where the drawing needs it. Sealing faces and bearing bores need it. Cosmetic side walls usually do not.

Full-Process Control Beats One-Stop Claims

Every exporter advertises a one-stop solution. The useful question is who owns each step. When milling, turning, heat treatment, and finishing sit with different subcontractors, tolerance stack-up and schedule risk both grow. GreatLight keeps the chain in-house across 3 wholly-owned plants covering 7,600 m², with 150 technicians.

Finishing choices affect function, not just looks. Anodizing comes in clear, colour, hardcoat, and conductive versions; conductive anodizing and hardcoat behave very differently on a mating surface. Plating options include electroless nickel, zinc, silver, and gold. Powder coating and black oxide cover the heavier-duty side. Bead blasting, tumbling, brushing, and polishing handle texture. Laser marking works down to a 1.5 mm character height, so plan your part marking with that limit in mind.

Certifications tell you which audits the shop already passes. ISO 9001:2015 is the baseline. IATF 16949:2016 covers automotive work. ISO 13485:2016 covers medical devices. ISO 27001:2022 covers information security, which matters when your CAD files are the product. Four certificates do not guarantee a good part, but they tell you the paperwork and traceability habits are already in place.

Quoting and delivery

Quote Speed, DFM Feedback, and Lead Time

A quote without manufacturability feedback is just a price. The useful reply flags thin walls, deep pockets, sharp internal corners, and datums that cannot be reached in one setup. GreatLight returns a quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours, and production can start within 24 hours after that. Parts ship in 3–5 days on standard programs.

Lead time promises vary widely, so ask for history rather than a promise. A low late-delivery rate on past orders is a better signal than any stated target. GreatLight reports a historical late-delivery probability below 2%. For prototyping, no minimum order quantity applies, so a single part and a 10,000+ part run both go through the same process.

Protection of your design is part of the commercial discussion. Uploads are handled as secure and confidential, and an NDA is available on request. If your program needs one, sign it before the first file transfer, not after the first order. It is easier to set the terms early than to correct them later.

FAQs

Questions Engineers Ask Before Ordering

Can a China custom CNC milling supplier hold ±0.005 mm on every feature?

No, and you should be suspicious of any shop that says yes. ±0.005 mm is achievable on defined features with a stable setup and a suitable material. On thin walls, long bores, or soft plastics, the practical limit is looser.

Mark the critical dimensions and datums on the drawing. The shop can then tell you which ones are routine and which ones need a specific process or extra inspection.

What should be in a first article inspection report?

A dimensional report covering every drawing dimension, the datum references used, and the measuring equipment with its calibration status. For tight features, ask for the actual reading, not just pass or fail.

GreatLight runs raw material check, in-process monitoring, and final inspection, and reports are available on request. Request the report with the purchase order so it is planned into the schedule.

How do I protect my design when sending CAD files overseas?

Sign an NDA before the first transfer, keep the file set minimal, and confirm who inside the shop can open it. An information security certificate such as ISO 27001:2022 shows that file access is documented rather than informal.

GreatLight treats uploads as secure and confidential and offers an NDA on request.

Which parts are a poor fit for 5-axis milling?

Simple prismatic parts with one machined face rarely justify it. A three-axis setup mills them faster and cheaper. Very large flat plates that fit a three-axis travel envelope also gain little from simultaneous motion.

Five-axis pays off on contoured surfaces, deep cavities reached from multiple angles, and parts with features on several faces that would otherwise need three or four setups.

What is the smallest quantity you will run?

There is no minimum order quantity. One prototype and a 10,000+ part production run both go through the same process route and the same inspection steps.

For prototypes, the quote usually includes DFM notes so the design can be corrected before tooling or volume production starts.

How are turnaround times quoted?

Quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours after approval, and parts ship in 3–5 days. Anodizing, plating, and heat treatment extend the schedule.

Add finishing requirements to the RFQ so the quoted date includes them rather than arriving as a surprise later.
