How to Choose the Best CNC Machined Part Manufacturer for 2026
A working guide for design engineers, manufacturing engineers and sourcing teams who have to put a real part on a real machine. It covers what a cnc machined part manufacturer must prove before you release a drawing, which capabilities decide the outcome, and where cheaper quotes quietly fail. Read it and you can run a shop audit in one visit.

What This Page Covers
Five things decide whether a supplier can hold your part: geometry access, tolerance control, inspection evidence, material range, and how they handle a change order.
Five-Axis Access Is the First Real Filter
Most parts that reach a second or third quote request are not simple. They have features on four or five faces, thin walls, deep pockets, or a tolerance that stacks across two setups. A supplier running only three-axis mills has to reposition the part several times, and every reposition adds its own error. That is where a quote turns into a negotiation about what is actually achievable.
Simultaneous five-axis work removes most of that repositioning. At GreatLight we run 16 simultaneous 5-axis machining centers alongside 27 three-axis machines, so the routing follows the part instead of the other way round. A one-piece prototype and a 10,000-part run can use the same fixture strategy, which matters when you scale.
Ask for the machine list, not the machine count. The useful question is which spindle reaches the deepest feature on your drawing, and whether the shop can hold your datum in one setup. If the answer is vague, the tolerance on the quote is a guess.
- 1One setupFewer datum shifts, tighter stack-up across features.
- 2Undercuts and compound anglesReachable without an angled fixture.
- 3Thin wallsLower cutting force with shorter, stiffer tooling.
Tolerance and Surface Finish: Ask How, Not If
Any shop can write ±0.005 mm on a quotation. The difference is whether the process plan was built to reach it. That means temperature-controlled inspection, calibrated gauges, and a first-article report you can trace, not just a final pass on a height gauge. We hold ±0.005 mm (±0.0002 in) and inspect 100% of parts before shipment, with raw material checks, in-process monitoring and final inspection. Reports go out on request.
Surface finish is where drawings often stay silent. A sealing face, a bearing bore and a cosmetic panel are three different problems. As-machined finish lands around Ra 1.6–3.2 μm. A high-quality machined surface runs Ra 0.8–1.6 μm, and a fine finish reaches Ra 0.2–0.8 μm with the right tooling and passes. Tell the shop which surface actually contacts another part.
Do not spec a fine finish on a non-functional face. It adds cycle time and cost for nothing. Mark functional surfaces on the drawing and let the rest stay as machined.
- 1Functional surfaceCall out the Ra value and the mating part.
- 2Cosmetic surfaceBe specific about direction and color after anodizing.
- 3Free surfaceLeave it as machined. Save the cycle time.
Which Machine Class Fits Which Part
Use this as a first filter before sending an RFQ.
| Part type | Typical routing | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bracket, cover, single-face plate | 3-axis mill | Features sit on one face, one setup is enough |
| Housing with four side features | 4-axis mill | Rotary table reaches four faces without refixturing |
| Impeller, turbine blade, medical implant | 5-axis simultaneous | Compound angles and continuous contouring |
| Shaft with cross holes and threads | Mill-turn center | Turning and milling in one chuck, no second datum |
| Large frame, 4,000 mm length | Large-travel 5-axis | Travel 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm |
| High-volume small fitting | 3-axis or mill-turn | Cycle time and tool life dominate cost |
Material Range Tells You How Much Gets Subcontracted
A short material list usually means the shop sends work out. Every hand-off adds a week and blurs who owns the tolerance. Our in-house range covers aluminium 6061, 7075, 6082 and ADC12; stainless 303, 304, 316L, 17-4PH and 440C; steel 1018, 4140, 4340 and 4130; copper and brass including C36000 and beryllium copper; titanium TA2, TC4 and Inconel; plus magnesium AZ31B and plastics such as POM, PEEK, PC and ABS.
Material choice drives more than machinability. 7075 aluminium machines cleanly but does not weld well. 316L resists corrosion and work-hardens fast, so feeds and speeds matter. Inconel will eat tooling budget if the shop has not run it before. Ask what they cut last month.
Post-processing counts too. Anodizing, hardcoat, electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating, powder coating, black oxide, bead blasting and laser marking are all controlled steps. When finishing is in the same supply chain, a scratch found after anodizing does not become a two-week argument.
- 1Prototype quantitiesNo minimum order quantity. One piece is fine.
- 2VolumeUp to 10,000+ part runs.
- 3ConfidentialitySecure uploads and an NDA on request.
How a Quote Becomes a Shipped Part
The first 12 hours decide the project. We return a quotation and a free DFM analysis within that window, flagging features that will not machine as drawn, datum problems, and tolerances that cost more than they are worth. Production can start within 24 hours after that. Parts normally ship in 3–5 days.
The workflow is deliberately plain: review the drawing and the CAD model, agree the routing and the inspection plan, machine the first article, inspect it, then release the run. The first article is the contract. If it does not match the drawing, the discussion happens before the batch, not after.
Change orders are the common failure point in this industry. A revised drawing that never reaches the machine produces parts that match a spec nobody agreed to. So the revision number is written on the traveler, and the inspection plan is versioned with it. Historical late-delivery probability sits below 2%.
A Shop Audit You Can Finish in One Day
Walk the floor and watch three things. First, are machines running or idle. Second, is there a queue of parts waiting on inspection. Third, can the operator show you the current revision of the drawing at the machine. Those three answers tell you more than a slide deck.
Then check paperwork. We hold ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 27001:2022. Certificates cover the quality system, automotive, medical devices and information security. If your part is an implant component or an EV busbar, that difference is not administrative.
Finally, look at scale and continuity. GreatLight was founded in 2011 and now runs three wholly-owned plants covering 7,600 m² with 150 technicians, in Dongguan plus a Singapore factory. That footprint matters for a program that runs several years, because the people who built the fixture should still be there when you reorder.
- 1Ask for the routingIt shows whether the process was planned or guessed.
- 2Ask for the inspection planWhich features, which gauges, which frequency.
- 3Ask who owns the fixtureContinuity on a repeat order depends on it.
Questions Engineers Ask Before Awarding a Job
Can you machine a single prototype before we commit to volume?
Yes. There is no minimum order quantity, so a one-piece prototype is a normal job. The same routing and inspection plan can then carry into a 10,000+ part run, which keeps the first article relevant to production.
How do you handle a tolerance tighter than the standard ±0.005 mm?
We quote ±0.005 mm as the standard machining tolerance. Tighter features need a specific review of geometry, material and inspection method, so send the drawing and we will say plainly whether it is reachable and how we would measure it.
What inspection evidence comes with the parts?
All parts are inspected before shipment, covering raw material checks, in-process monitoring and final inspection. Inspection reports are available on request, and we agree the inspection plan before the run starts.
Do you sign an NDA for confidential designs?
Yes, an NDA is available on request, and uploads are handled as secure and confidential. For programs under information-security requirements, our ISO 27001:2022 system covers how design data is stored and accessed.
Which finishes can be applied without sending parts to another supplier?
Anodizing including hardcoat and conductive, electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating, powder coating, black oxide, bead blasting, tumbling, brushing, polishing, and laser marking with a minimum character height of 1.5 mm.
What is the largest part you can machine?
The maximum processing size is 4,000 mm. Large-travel five-axis machines cover 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm, and medium and compact travels cover 750 × 1,150 × 550 mm, 600 × 600 × 600 mm, 500 × 500 × 450 mm and 500 × 310 × 200 mm.
