Five-axis machining centers can be divided into two types according to structural classification:
These are horizontal five-axis machining centers and vertical five-axis machining centers, developed from conventional horizontal machining centers and conventional vertical (three-axis) machining centers. A conventional vertical (three-axis) machining center can process only the top surface of the part at a time. Conventional horizontal machining centers typically have three linear coordinate axes plus a table rotation axis. Conventional horizontal machining centers use table rotation to process other surfaces except the top surface and mounting surface by clamping the workpiece at the same time. Nowadays, horizontal and vertical machining centers are developing in the direction of five-axis control. The workpiece can be clamped to complete processing of multiple surfaces at the same time. If it is equipped with a five-axis linkage CNC system, it can. also perform high-precision processing of complex spatial surfaces. So these two were born.
There are also two ways to rotate the axis of the five-axis horizontal machining center:
The first is that the horizontal spindle swings as a rotating axis, plus a rotating axis of the workbench, to achieve five-axis linkage processing. This adjustment method is simple and flexible. If the spindle needs to be switched vertically and horizontally, simply index and position the worktable, and it can be simply configured as a three-axis machining center with vertical or horizontal switching. Vertical and horizontal conversion of the spindle and indexing of the worktable enable pentahedral machining of the workpiece, which reduces manufacturing costs and is very convenient. The worktable can also be equipped with CNC axes, with a minimum indexing value of 0.001 degrees, but without linkage, to become a four-axis machining center with vertical and horizontal conversion, adapting to different requirements processing, and the price is very competitive.
The other is the rotating axis of the traditional workbench. The A-axis of the workbench placed on the bed generally has a working range of +20 degrees to -100 degrees. There is also a B axis of the turntable in the middle of the workbench, and the B axis can rotate 360 degrees in both directions. This bonding characteristic is better than the first method and is often used to process complex curved surfaces of large wheels. The rotary axis can also be equipped with circular grating feedback, and the indexing accuracy can reach a few seconds. Of course, the structure of this rotary axis is relatively complex and its price is high.
