What goes wrong

Where quotes and first articles usually fail

These are the four messages we hear most from engineers before they send files.

01

The quote arrives too late to help

A week passes and the project meeting has already happened. Without a price and a DFM note, you cannot compare suppliers or freeze the design. Our quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours of receiving a complete file set.

02

The drawing is quoted but not read

Thin walls, deep pockets and tight true-position callouts get ignored until the first article fails inspection. We flag them before cutting metal, so you decide on a design change or a process change while changes are still cheap.

03

The tolerance in the email is not the tolerance on the part

If the RFQ says ±0.05 mm and the drawing says ±0.005 mm, someone has to ask. We quote to the drawing, state the process that holds it, and list the inspection method so the number is not a guess.

04

Files sit in an inbox for days

Confidential models passed around by email slow the project and create risk. Uploads to our quote system are secure and confidential, and we sign an NDA on request before any file is opened.

How we quote

One file set, one engineer, one clear price

You send geometry and requirements. We read them, check manufacturability, and answer with a price and a plan.

What to upload to get an accurate price

The fastest path to a useful number is a native 3D model plus a 2D drawing. STEP or IGES gives us geometry for toolpath planning; the drawing carries tolerances, datums, surface finish and thread callouts that no solid model shows. If you only have a print, send it and we will quote from that.

Tell us the material grade, the quantity, and the finish in the first message. A 6061-T6 bracket at 50 pieces and the same part at 5,000 pieces are two different processes, and the quote should reflect that. Add any inspection report you need, such as a first article or a dimensional report.

What comes back

The quote, the DFM note, and the plan behind them

Your reply contains the unit price, tooling or setup charges if any, the lead time, and a short DFM list. That list names the features that drive cost: a 0.5 mm wall, a corner radius smaller than the cutter, a hole depth past four times diameter, or a tolerance that forces a second operation. You can accept the price or ask us to re-quote a relaxed version.

Production can start within 24 hours of approval on standard jobs, and parts ship in 3 to 5 days. There is no minimum order quantity. A single prototype and a 10,000-piece run both go through the same quote desk, and both get 100% inspection before shipment.

Services

Processes you can put on one request quote

Send multiple parts in one file set and we quote each by the process that fits it.

01

5-Axis CNC Machining

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers for complex geometry, undercuts and parts that need five faces in one setup. Maximum processing size 4,000 mm.

02

CNC Milling and Turning

27 three-axis machines, 12 four-axis mills and 16 mill-turn centers. Shafts, housings, manifolds and prismatic parts at ±0.005 mm.

03

Rapid Prototyping

Fast turnaround on one-off parts and design iterations. Useful when the geometry is still moving and you need a fit check, not a production run.

04

Metal Die Casting

Aluminum and zinc castings for housings and brackets at volume, with machining, tapping and finishing handled after the casting.

05

Vacuum Casting

Silicone tooling for small batches of 10 to 200 units. Good for cosmetic shells and pre-production samples before hard tooling is cut.

06

Surface Finishing

Anodizing, plating, powder coating, black oxide, bead blasting and laser marking. Marking minimum character height is 1.5 mm.

Why GreatLight

What makes the quote hold up in production

Six things that decide whether the price you accept is the price you pay.

15Y

Machining since 2011

Fifteen years on the same shop floor in Dongguan, with a second plant in Singapore. 150 technicians and 3 wholly-owned plants across 7,600 m².

127

Machines under one roof

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers, 12 four-axis mills, 27 three-axis machines and 16 mill-turn centers. The process we quote is the process we run.

±0.005

Tolerance stated up front

We quote to the number on your drawing and name the process that holds it. If a feature needs a second operation, that cost appears in the quote, not later.

FAQs

Questions before you request quote

What files do you need to quote a part?

A STEP or IGES model plus a 2D PDF drawing is the best combination. The model gives geometry, the drawing gives tolerances, datums, finish and thread callouts.

If you only have a drawing, we can quote from it. If you only have a solid model and no tolerances, we quote to a general machining tolerance and say so in the reply.

How fast is the quotation?

A complete file set gets a quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours. Incomplete files take longer because we have to ask before we can price.

Production can start within 24 hours of approval on standard jobs, and parts ship in 3 to 5 days.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No. We run from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs. The setup cost is spread over the quantity, so the unit price falls as the batch grows, but a single part is still a valid order.

For one-off parts, expect to pay for setup and programming. That is normal for any machine shop.

Are my uploads and drawings confidential?

Yes. Uploads are secure and confidential, and we sign an NDA on request before opening files. Our information security management system is certified to ISO 27001:2022.

If your process requires it, tell us at the start and we will route the project through the NDA before any review begins.

Can you hold ±0.005 mm on my part?

It depends on the feature, the material and the size. ±0.005 mm is achievable on rigid parts in aluminum, stainless and steel on our 5-axis centers, with temperature control and in-process probing.

It is not realistic on a thin wall, a long unsupported bore, or a soft material like HDPE. In those cases we say so and quote a tolerance the process can hold.

What materials do you machine?

Aluminum 6061, 6061-T6, 2024, 5052, 5083, 6063, 6082, 7075 and ADC12; stainless 303, 304, 316, 316L, 420, 430, 431, 440C and 17-4PH; steel 1018, 1045, 4130, 4140, 4340 and A36; copper and brass including C36000; titanium TA1, TA2, TC4; Inconel; magnesium AZ31B and AZ91D.

Plastics include ABS, PC, PMMA, POM, PA, PEEK, PP, HDPE and carbon fibre. If your grade is not listed, ask and we will confirm before quoting.

What finishes can be added to the quote?

Anodizing in clear, colour, hardcoat and conductive; electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating; powder coating and black oxide; bead blasting, tumbling, brushing and polishing; laser marking and engraving.

Laser marking has a minimum character height of 1.5 mm. Below that, the mark is not reliable, so we will suggest a different location or size.

What happens if a first article fails inspection?

We inspect 100% of parts before shipment and check raw material, in-process dimensions and the final part. If a feature is out of tolerance, we tell you before the parts ship rather than after they arrive.

You decide whether to rework, remachine or accept a deviation. Reports are available on request for any job.
