Common Problems

Where motorcycle parts go wrong

Four issues show up again and again on retrofit, prototype and low-volume production runs.

01

Caliper brackets flex under hard braking

A bracket machined from the wrong alloy or with thin ribs bends at the caliper mount. Lever feel goes soft and the pad wears at an angle. The fix starts at the drawing stage: pick 7075 or 17-4PH, thicken the load path, and machine the mounting faces in one setup so bore alignment holds.

02

Axle blocks and triple clamps won't hold alignment

Stacked setups on three-axis machines let runout creep past 0.03 mm. The fork tubes then bind, and the front end feels vague at speed. Five-axis machining keeps the bore and the clamping face in the same datum, which is how ±0.005 mm stays reachable on a 200 mm part.

03

Engine cases leak at the mating face

A face that is not flat to within a few microns will not seal, no matter how much gasket compound you use. Porosity in a cheap casting makes it worse. We machine from billet or from a checked casting, and we verify flatness before the part leaves the floor.

04

Small runs get refused or priced out

Many shops want 500 pieces before they answer an email. If you are building five retrofits or one race bike, that stops the project. Our floor runs from a single prototype up to 10,000+ parts, and the tooling is set up the same way either time.

How We Machine Them

One setup, one datum, one inspection report

The parts that survive racing and road use are the ones machined with the fewest re-clamps.

Setup Strategy

Five-axis work on complex motorcycle parts

A triple clamp, a swingarm pivot plate or a caliper bracket has features on four or five faces. On a three-axis mill that means four setups, four fixture changes and four chances to lose 0.01 mm. We put those parts on 16 simultaneous 5-axis centers, so the bores, the mounting faces and the clamping surfaces all come off one datum.

That matters most on parts that move under load. If the caliper mounting bore is not square to the fork axis, the pads drag on one edge and the disc wears unevenly. One setup removes that error before it starts.

Alloy choice decides how the part behaves

A caliper bracket in 6061 will flex where a 7075 bracket holds. A fork cap in 303 stainless machines clean but galling shows up on the thread after a few seasons. We keep the common motorcycle alloys on the shelf and we will say when the drawing calls for the wrong one.

Hardened metals and titanium need slower feeds and more attention to tool wear. TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) and 17-4PH are both on our list. We machine them at the speeds they need, not the speeds that suit the schedule.

Capabilities

What we run for motorcycle and auto work

Six processes cover most of the parts that come through the door.

01

5-axis CNC machining

Complex brackets, clamps and housings machined on five faces in one setup. This is the process that holds ±0.005 mm on multi-face parts.

02

CNC milling and turning

Axles, spacers, bushings and threaded parts. Mill-turn centers handle parts that need both operations without a second fixture.

03

3-axis and 4-axis machining

Flat plates, covers and bolt patterns. A practical choice when the part does not need five faces and you want the cost down.

04

Rapid prototyping

One-off parts for fit checks and track testing. Same machines as production, so the geometry you test is the geometry you order.

05

Surface finishing

Anodizing, hardcoat, powder coating, bead blasting and laser marking. Marking works down to 1.5 mm character height.

06

Inspection and reporting

100% inspection before shipment. Raw material check, in-process monitoring and final inspection, with reports on request.

Why GreatLight

Reasons engineers keep sending drawings

Six points, each one tied to a number on our floor.

15Y

Machining since 2011

Fifteen years on the same site in Dongguan, plus a factory in Singapore. The process knowledge sits with the people running the machines.

127

CNC machines on the floor

Sixteen simultaneous 5-axis centers, twelve four-axis mills, twenty-seven three-axis machines and sixteen mill-turn centers. Work moves without waiting on one spindle.

FAQs

Questions we get from motorcycle builders

What file format should I send for a quote?

STEP and IGES are the safest, because they carry solid geometry. Native files from Inventor, SolidWorks and Fusion 360 also open fine on our side.

If you only have a 2D print, send it. We will read it and flag anything that looks hard to hold, such as a tolerance tighter than the process can reach.

Can you machine a single prototype before I commit to a run?

Yes. We have no minimum order quantity, so one part goes on the same machines as a 10,000-part run.

Prototype work usually ships in 3–5 days once the drawing is locked. That is the same window as our regular production parts.

How do I know which alloy to specify?

Start with the load case. Parts that see cyclic load, like caliper brackets and suspension links, want 7075 or 17-4PH rather than 6061. Threaded parts that see repeated assembly do better in 303 or 316L.

If you are unsure, send the drawing and describe how the part is used. Our DFM note will suggest a material and say why.

Do you handle anodizing and other finishes in-house?

We manage anodizing in clear, color, hardcoat and conductive, plus electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating, powder coating and black oxide.

Bead blasting, tumbling, brushing and polishing are also available. Laser marking works down to 1.5 mm character height.

What inspection data comes with the parts?

Every order gets 100% inspection before shipment: raw material check, in-process monitoring and a final check against the drawing.

Inspection reports are available on request. If a feature is critical, tell us and we will record the actual numbers for it.

How do you protect my design?

Uploads are handled as confidential and stay inside the project. If you need a signed document before sending files, an NDA is available on request.

We do not share customer drawings or use them to build parts for anyone else.

Can you meet automotive quality requirements?

We hold ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016, along with ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 27001:2022. That covers the documentation and traceability that automotive buyers ask for.

Our qualification rate across inspected production is 99.99%, and the historical late-delivery probability is below 2%.

What happens after I approve the quote?

We confirm the drawing and material, then production can start within 24 hours. Parts typically ship in 3–5 days.

If something in the drawing will not machine as drawn, you hear it during the 12-hour DFM review, not after the first cut.
