How to Vet a Reliable Custom Metal 3D Printing Supplier

This guide is for engineers and sourcing teams buying metal AM parts, not for hobby printing. It covers the seven checks that separate a print-and-ship shop from a supplier that can also machine, finish and document your part. Read it before you send an RFQ.

Key takeaways

Ask who machines the partAn as-built SLM surface is not a finished interface. If the supplier cannot mill, ream or grind the critical features in-house, you inherit the second-vendor risk.
Tolerance is a system numberMetal AM alone will not hold ±0.005 mm. That figure only means something when it is quoted as a post-machining tolerance on specific datums.
Certificates must match your industryISO 9001 covers general quality. Medical work needs ISO 13485, automotive needs IATF 16949, and cloud-stored CAD needs ISO 27001.
Post-processing is where schedules slipSupport removal, HIP, heat treat, stress relief and plating are the steps most often missing from a lead-time promise. Get them named.
One prototype is a valid test orderA supplier that accepts a single part run and still gives DFM feedback is telling you how it will treat a 10,000-part program.

Pick the supplier that can machine what it prints

If the supplier cannot machine, heat treat and inspect the part in the same plant, you are managing two schedules instead of one. Award the program on the full routing, not on the print price.

Check 1

What a custom metal 3d printing supplier owes you before the build

Powder-bed fusion gives you geometry that casting and milling cannot reach. It also gives you anisotropy, residual stress and support marks. A supplier that only asks for an STL and a quantity is treating the job as a commodity print, and the risk lands on your drawing.

The first deliverable should be manufacturability feedback, not a price. Orientation decides whether a thin wall warps. Support strategy decides whether a channel is cleanable. Shrink compensation decides whether a Ø8 H7 bore comes out round. If none of that is discussed, the first article becomes the discussion.

This is why we return a quotation and a free DFM analysis within 12 hours of receiving a file. The analysis names the features we would rotate, the walls we would thicken, and the faces we would leave stock on for later machining. You can reject every point. You cannot make an informed award without them.

  • 1
Send the 3D model plus a 2D drawingThe model defines geometry; the drawing defines datums, fits and which surfaces actually matter.
  • 2
Flag every mating surfaceSealing faces, bearing bores and dowel holes usually need machining stock, not as-built AM.
  • 3
State the load directionBuild orientation should follow the principal stress axis, not the build plate packing.
Check 2

Why an integrated AM and CNC house shortens the critical path

Most metal AM parts need a machined interface. You may need a flat sealing face, a reamed bore, a threaded port or a gasket groove. If the printing shop subcontracts that work, your part travels between two schedules, two quality systems and two shipping documents. Every handoff is a place where a dimension can move.

When printing and machining sit in the same plant, the build can leave stock on selected faces and go straight to a 5-axis cell. We run 16 simultaneous 5-axis machining centers, 12 four-axis mills and 27 three-axis machines, so a post-print operation does not wait in a queue behind unrelated work. Maximum processing size is 4,000 mm, which covers most brackets, housings and manifolds.

The practical benefit is tolerance control on the features that matter. Metal AM alone is not a ±0.005 mm process. Post-machining on a known datum is. The supplier should be able to tell you which surfaces come off the printer and which ones come off the mill.

Ask where the part is cut free from the plate. That is the moment residual stress releases and the part moves. If the answer is a wire EDM or a bandsaw in the same building, the geometry you inspected is the geometry you receive.

  • 1
Hybrid workflowPrint near-net, then machine the datums, bores and sealing faces.
  • 2
One quality recordBuild parameters and machining results stay in the same inspection file.
  • 3
No shipping loopThe part is not packed, shipped and re-fixtured at a second vendor.

Materials, certifications and the paperwork trail

Powder source matters more than the machine brand. Ask for the alloy designation and the lot. We work across aluminium 6061, 6061-T6, 2024, 5052, 5083, 6063, 6082, 7075 and ADC12; stainless 303, 304, 316, 316L, 420, 430, 431, 440C and 17-4PH; tool and alloy steels; copper and brass grades including C101, C110 and C36000; and titanium TA1, TA2, TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) plus Inconel and magnesium AZ31B and AZ91D.

Certification scope is the part buyers get wrong. A logo on a website proves nothing. ISO 9001:2015 covers general quality management. IATF 16949:2016 applies to automotive production. ISO 13485:2016 applies to medical devices. ISO 27001:2022 covers information security, which matters when you upload proprietary CAD. Ask which certificate covers the site that will run your job.

Inspection should be routine, not a paid extra. We inspect 100% of parts before shipment, with raw material checks, in-process monitoring and a final inspection, and we supply reports on request. A qualification rate of 99.99% is only credible if the inspection method is named: CMM, optical comparator, surface roughness tester, hardness tester.

For medical and automotive programs, ask how first-article inspection is handled and how revision changes are recorded. The answer tells you whether the quality system is live or a framed document in the lobby.

Check 4

Lead time, order size and where schedules actually slip

Quoted lead time usually counts printing hours only. The real clock includes support removal, stress relief, heat treatment, HIP if the alloy needs it, machining, finishing and inspection. A 3-day print can become a 3-week delivery if those steps are not on the same schedule.

Our standard flow is a quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours, production start within 24 hours, and parts shipping in 3–5 days. Historical late-delivery probability is below 2%. Those numbers assume the drawing is frozen and the material is in stock, so treat them as a planning baseline, not a contract date.

Order size is the other filter. Some AM shops price a single prototype at a punitive rate to push you toward volume. We have no minimum order quantity and run from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs. A supplier willing to take a one-piece job is usually the same supplier that will take your production ramp seriously.

If your program has a hard launch date, split the order. Run the first article through the full process, inspect it, then release the balance. That converts a schedule risk into a measurement.

  • 1
Ask for the full routingPrint, cut-off, heat treat, machine, finish, inspect — with days against each step.

Confirm material stockExotic powder grades can add waiting time that is not in the print schedule.

Freeze the drawingRevision changes during the build are the most common cause of a slipped date.

Cost drivers you can influence at the quoting stage

Metal AM price is driven by build volume, not by part weight. A tall support structure costs the same machine time as solid metal in the same layer. Rotating a part to reduce height by 20 mm can cut build time more than shaving 100 g of mass. This is the single most useful lever an engineer has.

Support removal and surface finishing are labor-heavy. A part with internal channels that must be polished by hand will cost more than an external bracket with the same envelope. If a channel needs Ra 0.8–1.6 μm, say so at quoting, not after the first article. Bead blasting, tumbling, brushing and polishing all have different labor content.

Post-machining is priced by feature, not by surface area. One reamed bore is cheap. Twenty tight-tolerance bores on five faces may need a dedicated fixture and a 5-axis setup, which changes the economics. Group critical features onto as few faces as the design allows.

Finishing choices also move cost: anodizing, electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating, powder coating, black oxide, and laser marking with a minimum character height of 1.5 mm. Pick them at the quote stage so the routing is built once.

  • 1
Reduce build heightOrientation changes often beat geometry changes on cost.
  • 2
Consolidate critical facesFewer machining setups means lower post-processing cost.
  • 3
Specify finish by functionSealing surfaces need a roughness number; cosmetic surfaces need a visual standard.

Seven steps to qualify a supplier before you award the program

Run these in order. Each step produces a document you can compare across vendors.

  • 1
    1. Send a real part, not a benchmark couponUse a geometry with at least one tight bore, one thin wall under 1.5 mm and one sealing face. A tensile bar tells you about the alloy, not about the supplier.
  • 2
    2. Demand written DFM feedback with the quoteExpect orientation, support strategy, stock allowance and any feature you should redesign. A price with no comments is a red flag.
  • 3
    3. Ask for the full process routing with days per stepPrint, cut-off, stress relief, heat treat, HIP if needed, CNC finishing, surface treatment, inspection. Compare total days, not print hours.
  • 4
    4. Confirm which certificate covers the plantMatch ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 13485 or ISO 27001 to your industry, and check the site address on the certificate.
  • 5
    5. Specify tolerance by feature and datumState which surfaces need ±0.005 mm and which can stay at Ra 1.6–3.2 μm as-built. Blanket tolerance claims are not measurable.
  • 6
    6. Order one piece, then inspect itMeasure the critical features yourself or send them to a third-party lab. No minimum order quantity means this test is affordable.
  • 7
    7. Agree the confidentiality routeSecure uploads with an NDA available on request. Confirm who inside the plant can open your CAD files.
FAQs

Questions engineers ask before awarding a metal AM program

Can metal 3D printing hold ±0.005 mm as-built?

No. Powder-bed fusion has thermal distortion, layer stair-stepping and support-mark effects. As-built surfaces typically sit around Ra 1.6–3.2 μm and dimensional spread is wider than a machining tolerance.

The ±0.005 mm figure applies to features that are post-machined on a defined datum. Ask the supplier to separate as-built tolerances from machined tolerances in the quote.

When is metal AM the wrong process?

When the part is a simple prismatic block, when the annual volume is high enough for die casting or forging, or when surface finish is the dominant requirement across the whole part.

In those cases, 5-axis CNC machining, die casting or vacuum casting will usually be cheaper and faster. A good supplier will tell you so instead of taking the order.

What does post-processing add to lead time?

Support removal, stress relief, heat treatment, HIP, CNC finishing, plating or anodizing, and final inspection all sit between the printer and the shipping box.

Ask for days against each step. That routing, not the print time, is what determines your delivery date.

Do I need a 2D drawing if I send a 3D model?

Yes, for anything with a fit. The model carries geometry but not datums, tolerances, thread classes or surface roughness requirements.

A drawing also gives the inspection team a document to measure against, which is what your quality department will ask for later.

How is confidentiality handled?

Uploads are secure and confidential, and an NDA is available on request. We hold ISO 27001:2022 for information security.

For defense, medical and unreleased automotive work, agree the NDA before the first file transfer, not after the purchase order.

Can one supplier handle both the prototype and the production run?

That is the point of an integrated house. The same plant that prints the first article also runs the CNC finishing and inspection for the production batch.

We have no minimum order quantity, so the qualification build can be a single part and the follow-on order can scale to 10,000+ pieces without changing suppliers or quality systems.
