Common problems

Where Brass Turning Jobs Go Wrong

These are the four failures we hear about most often. Each one has a root cause you can check.

01

Tolerance drift on the second run

The first article passes, then the next 500 pieces slide out of tolerance. Free-machining brass moves with tool wear and thermal growth. Without in-process monitoring at fixed intervals, the drift is not visible until the parts are at your door. Rework or scrap follows. We monitor dimensions during the run to catch drift early.

02

Burrs inside small cross-holes

A turned brass fitting with cross-drilled holes often carries a burr ring on the inside. Hand deburring removes the visual burr and leaves an edge that damages the mating part. Controlling burr formation needs correct feed, tool geometry, and a defined deburring step, not a quick pass with a scraper.

03

Wrong brass alloy for the environment

C36000 machines well and costs less. But it contains lead, and it corrodes faster in marine or high-humidity service. If your drawing calls out a general brass without naming the alloy, you may get free-machining stock where C27400 or C28000 is needed. The failure shows up in the field, not at incoming inspection.

04

No dimensional report with the shipment

You receive parts and a packing list. Nothing else. When a quality issue appears six months later, there is no record of what was measured or when. Without documented inspection data, every claim becomes a discussion instead of a check against numbers.

How We Machine Brass

Precision Turning Built Around Alloy and Tolerance

Brass is a good turning material. It only behaves well when you control the alloy choice, tool wear, and inspection loop.

Alloy selection

Pick the Brass Before You Cut the First Chip

We stock C101, C103, C110, C27400, C28000, and C36000. C36000 is the default for high-volume turning because it breaks chips cleanly and holds a good finish at higher feeds. For parts that touch water, salt spray, or food, we steer toward C27400 or C28000, which trade some machinability for better corrosion behavior.

The alloy choice changes your surface finish and your tool life. It also changes the price, so we tell you when a cheaper grade will work and when it will fail. If your drawing only says brass, we ask what the part contacts before we quote.

±0.005 mm Holds Only With a Closed Inspection Loop

Holding ±0.005 mm on a turned brass part is not a machine specification. It is a process. We qualify the first article, then check critical diameters at set intervals during the run. If a dimension trends, the operator adjusts before the parts leave the machine.

Every batch gets 100% inspection before shipment. That covers raw material verification, in-process monitoring, and a final dimensional check. We can supply reports on request, and we keep the data so a future question has an answer.

For parts with a fine finish requirement, we can turn to Ra 0.2–0.8 μm. For general turned parts, Ra 0.8–1.6 μm is the normal working range, and Ra 1.6–3.2 μm covers as-machined surfaces where cosmetics do not matter.

Machining Services Around Brass Turning

Turning is the core. These services cover the steps before and after it.

01

CNC Turning and Milling

127 machines, including 16 mill-turn centers. Turned brass parts with cross-holes, flats, and slots often come off in one setup. That removes re-chucking error and shortens the schedule.

02

5-Axis Machining

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers handle contoured brass parts and features that would need three or four setups on a 3-axis machine. Maximum processing size is 4,000 mm.

03

Rapid Prototyping

One part or twenty, turned from bar stock. No tooling cost. First articles ship in 3–5 days after drawing release, so you can test fit before committing to a run.

04

Surface Finishing

Nickel, zinc, silver, and gold plating. Bead blasting, tumbling, brushing, and polishing. Laser marking down to 1.5 mm character height for part numbers and traceability.

05

Inspection and Reporting

100% inspection before shipment. Raw material check, in-process monitoring, final dimensional check. Reports on request for your incoming quality file.

06

Assembly and Kitting

Turned brass parts can be assembled with mating components and packed as a kit. Useful when a sub-assembly arrives at your line and goes straight into production.

What You Get With an ISO 9001 Shop

Certifications and machine counts only matter if they change what arrives at your dock.

±0.005

Tolerance in millimeters

That is ±0.0002 in. We hold it on turned brass features when the drawing defines the datum. We will tell you when a feature cannot hold it and why.

ISO 9001

Quality system, not a wall poster

Our ISO 9001:2015 certificate covers documented process control. Raw material records, in-process checks, and final inspection are part of the workflow, not an add-on.

FAQs

Questions Engineers Ask About Brass Turning

What tolerance can you hold on a turned brass part?

We hold ±0.005 mm (±0.0002 in) on turned brass features when the drawing defines a clear datum and the feature can be reached in one setup. That covers most diameters, bores, and shoulder lengths.

Some features cannot hold that number. A thin wall under 1 mm will deflect under cutting force. A deep small bore may need a reaming step. We flag these during DFM review and tell you what tolerance is realistic before you commit to a run.

Which brass alloy should I specify?

C36000 is the standard choice for high-volume turning. It machines fast, breaks chips cleanly, and takes a good finish. Use it for fittings, connectors, and general turned parts.

C27400 and C28000 are better when the part sees water, salt spray, or food contact, because they trade machinability for corrosion resistance. C101, C103, and C110 suit electrical and thermal duty. If your drawing just says brass, we ask what the part contacts before quoting.

Do you charge for a quote or DFM analysis?

No. Send a 3D file and we return a quotation with free DFM analysis within 12 hours. The analysis covers alloy choice, tolerance feasibility, and any feature that will be hard to machine.

There is no minimum order quantity. One prototype or a 10,000-piece run both go through the same quote process.

How do you prevent burrs on cross-drilled holes?

Burr control starts with the cutting parameters and tool geometry, not with a scraper at the end. We choose feeds and speeds that reduce burr formation, then define a deburring step that removes the remaining edge without changing the hole size.

For medical and fluid-handling parts, we inspect the internal passages before shipment. A burr ring that survives into your assembly can damage a mating seal. It is cheaper to remove it here.

Can you supply inspection reports with the parts?

Yes, on request. Every batch gets 100% inspection before shipment, covering raw material verification, in-process monitoring, and a final dimensional check.

If you need documented dimensional data for your incoming quality file, tell us at the quote stage so we set up the report format before the run starts. Adding it later means re-measuring parts that already passed.

What is the lead time for turned brass parts?

Quotation and DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours after you approve the quote. Parts ship in 3–5 days.

For larger runs or parts with plating, the schedule depends on the finishing step. We confirm the date at the quote stage rather than after the order.

How do you handle confidentiality?

Uploads are secure and confidential. We hold ISO 27001:2022 certification for information security, and we sign an NDA on request before you send the drawing.

If your project needs a signed agreement first, ask for it at the contact stage. We will not share your files or use your parts in marketing material without written permission.

Can you machine brass parts with tight concentricity between bore and thread?

Yes. The key is completing the bore and the thread in one setup, or on a mill-turn center that keeps the part on the same axis. Re-chucking between operations is what breaks concentricity.

For parts with a Ø400 mm rotary table requirement or a long axial bore, we plan the setup during DFM review. If the drawing tolerance is tighter than the setup can hold, we say so before the run.
