6082 Aluminum Alloy

Precision CNC Machining Services for 6082 Aluminum Components

6082-T6 machines like a free-cutting alloy but holds strength closer to 6061. We cut it on 127 CNC machines, hold ±0.005 mm, and ship anodized 6082 parts in 3-5 days.

Where 6082 jobs go wrong

Four Problems We See With 6082 Parts

6082 is not 6061. Treat it like a drop-in substitute and the scrap bin fills up.

01

Torn threads in 6082-T6

6082-T6 sits around 95 HB, so small tapped holes can tear instead of cut. A form tap run at the wrong speed leaves ragged flanks that fail a thread gauge. We adjust tap style and feed before the first hole, not after the reject.

02

Bowing after heat or weld

A 4,000 mm extrusion rail machined flat can move once it sees service heat or a weld bead nearby. Flatness drifts and bolt holes stop lining up. Stress relief of the stock and a finishing pass after roughing keep the rail straight.

03

Anodize color that will not match

6082 carries more manganese than 6061, and dye uptake shifts with it. Two batches of the same part can come back two shades apart. We keep the alloy lot together and run test coupons through the same anodize line.

04

Thin walls that chatter

A 0.3 mm wall in 6082 rings under a standard end mill. Finish turns out wavy and the part is scrap. Light radial passes, a shrink-fit holder and a supported setup hold the wall without vibration marks.

Alloy-specific speeds, feeds and fixtures, not a generic aluminum program.

Speeds and Feeds Tuned to 6082, Not 6061

6082-T6 is a heat-treatable alloy with good fatigue strength and corrosion resistance. It also cuts a little harder than 6061 because of its manganese and chromium content. Running a 6061 program on 6082 usually works, but tool life and surface finish both suffer.

We set cutting data per alloy lot. Higher top speeds for roughing, a controlled finishing pass to hit Ra 0.8–1.6 μm, and a chip load that keeps heat out of the part rather than in the tool.

Setups That Hold ±0.005 mm on Long 6082 Parts

Aluminum moves under clamping load. On a long 6082 rail or a thin plate, a vise tightened the same way every time still bends the part between operations. We design soft jaws and vacuum or support fixtures around the actual geometry.

Every part is inspected before shipment. Raw material certificates come in with the stock, in-process checks catch drift during the run, and a final dimensional report is available on request.

FAQs

Questions About Machining 6082 Aluminum

Is 6082 a good substitute for 6061?

Often yes. 6082-T6 is a bit stronger and has slightly better fatigue performance, so it works well for structural rails, brackets and frames.

It cuts a little harder than 6061. If your part has very fine threads or thin features, 6061 can still be the easier choice. Send the drawing and we will say which one machines cleaner.

Can 6082 parts be anodized?

Yes. Clear, color and hardcoat anodizing all work on 6082.

Color matching is the part to watch. 6082 carries more manganese than 6061, so dye uptake shifts. We keep the alloy lot together and run coupons through the same line before the production batch.

What tolerance can you hold on 6082?

±0.005 mm on critical features. For long parts, flatness and hole position matter more than a single tight dimension.

Test your tolerance against the function of the part. A bracket hole rarely needs ±0.005 mm. A bearing bore usually does.

How large a 6082 part can you machine?

Up to 4,000 mm on travel of 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm. Compact work goes on 500 × 500 × 450 mm and 500 × 310 × 200 mm machines.

Long aluminum rails are the common case. They get stress relief and a finishing pass so they do not bow after machining.

Do you have a minimum order quantity?

There is no minimum order quantity. One prototype and a 10,000+ part run both go through the same process.

Prototypes ship in 3-5 days after production starts. That is enough to check fit before committing to a larger run.

What surface finishes do you offer on 6082 parts?

Anodizing in clear, color, hardcoat and conductive types. Also electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating, powder coating and black oxide.

Bead blasting, tumbling, brushing and polishing are available. Laser marking and engraving are held at 1.5 mm minimum character height.

How do you keep my 6082 design confidential?

Uploads are secure and confidential, and we sign an NDA on request.

We hold ISO 27001:2022 for information security, alongside ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016 and ISO 13485:2016.

What do you need to quote a 6082 part?

A STEP or IGES file plus the drawing with tolerances, finish and quantity. Material grade and heat treatment help too.

You get a quotation and a free DFM analysis within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours after the order is confirmed.
