What to check before you place a CNC order in China
Use the left column as the filter and the right columns as the pass/fail test.
| Check | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Machine fit | 5-axis centers and 4,000 mm travel listed | Only 3-axis mills for contoured work |
| Tolerance claim | Tolerance given per feature and datum | One flat number for the whole part |
| Finish spec | Ra 0.8–1.6 μm offered as standard | Ra value quoted without a process |
| Lead time | Prototype in 3–5 days, 24-hour start | Vague 'fast turnaround' wording |
| MOQ | One piece accepted, no setup penalty | MOQ quoted before drawing review |
| Certification | ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 13485 on file | Certificate offered only after payment |
| Inspection | 100% inspection before shipment | Sample-only inspection, no report |
| Confidentiality | NDA available on request | Uploads stored without access control |
Pick the supplier whose limits match your drawing
If your part has contoured faces, tight bores and a 4,000 mm envelope, choose a shop with simultaneous 5-axis capacity and per-feature tolerance review. If it is a flat bracket, a 3-axis shop with fast quoting will cost less. Match capability to geometry, not to the lowest number on the page.
What CNC machining in China actually covers
Chinese CNC shops range from two-man job shops to plants with over a hundred machines. The useful question is not 'China or not' but 'which tier fits this part'. A supplier with 127 high-precision CNC machines, 16 simultaneous 5-axis machining centers and 16 mill-turn centers can hold a process plan across turning, milling and finishing without moving the part between vendors.
Travel size decides more than spindle speed. A 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm envelope handles long extrusion frames and rails that will not fit a 750 mm table. Compact cells around 500 × 500 × 450 mm and 500 × 310 × 200 mm run small, high-mix parts where fixture changeover dominates the cycle.
Materials matter for the quote as much as the geometry. Aluminum 6061-T6 and 7075, stainless 303 and 17-4PH, tool steel, titanium TC4, Inconel and engineering plastics such as POM and PEEK all have different cutting behavior. A shop that lists these grades usually has the tooling and feeds already dialed in.
Watch the handoff between machining and finishing. Anodizing, electroless nickel, zinc plating, powder coating and bead blasting each add days and can move critical dimensions. If finishing is subcontracted, ask who owns the tolerance after plating.
- 1One-off to 10,000+Same process plan for a prototype and a production run.
- 23 wholly-owned plants7,600 m² total, 150 technicians, Dongguan and Singapore.
- 3Finishing in-houseAnodizing, plating, black oxide, laser marking from 1.5 mm character height.
Tolerance, finish and how to read a capability claim
±0.005 mm is achievable, but only on the features the shop says it applies to. Thin walls, deep pockets and long unsupported bores move under cutting load. Send the drawing and ask which dimensions can hold that band and which will relax to ±0.02 mm or wider.
Surface finish follows the same logic. Ra 0.2–0.8 μm needs a finishing pass, sometimes a separate fine-boring or polishing step. Ra 0.8–1.6 μm is a normal machined finish for sealing faces and bearing seats. Ra 1.6–3.2 μm covers brackets, covers and non-contact surfaces at the lowest cost.
Datum strategy is the part buyers forget to discuss. If the drawing calls out two datums that cannot be reached in one setup, the shop either adds a fixture or ignores the callout. Both outcomes are expensive. Bring up datum access during the DFM review, before the first chip is cut.
Concentricity and perpendicularity are easier to hold when the feature can be cut in the same operation. A housing bored and faced in one 5-axis setup keeps alignment that a three-setup route cannot match. This is where machine selection turns into a tolerance result.
- 1Ra 0.8–1.6 μmStandard for seals, bearing seats and sliding faces.
- 2Ra 0.2–0.8 μmAdds a finishing pass and inspection time.
- 3Report on requestRaw material check, in-process monitoring, final inspection.
Lead time, MOQ and what a quote should include
Quote speed is a signal. A quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours means someone opened the model, checked tool access and flagged thin features. Production can start within 24 hours after approval, and parts ship in 3–5 days for typical prototype work.
MOQ is where small buyers get squeezed. Some shops add a setup charge that makes a single part uneconomic. No minimum order quantity from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs is the cleaner arrangement, because the first article and the production batch use the same fixtures and inspection plan.
Ask what the price includes. Machining, material, finishing, inspection and packing should be separate lines. A single lump sum hides whether the anodizing is clear or hardcoat, or whether the 4,000 mm rail is straightened before shipping.
Confidentiality is part of the commercial package. Uploads should be access-controlled, and an NDA should be available on request before you send production drawings. If a supplier hesitates at that stage, treat it as a data-handling warning.

Certification fit by industry
ISO 9001:2015 is the baseline. It says a quality system exists and is audited. It does not say the shop can hold ±0.005 mm on your part, and it does not cover automotive or medical-specific controls.
IATF 16949:2016 adds automotive requirements such as PPAP discipline, traceability and change control. If you build EV powertrain or under-hood parts, a supplier without it will push paperwork back onto your quality team.
ISO 13485:2016 is the medical device standard. It brings validation, clean handling and document control expectations. Surgical instruments, housings and fluid-path components usually need this before a purchase order is raised.
ISO 27001:2022 covers information security. It matters when you send CAD, tooling data or patient-adjacent designs. A shop holding all four certificates can serve aerospace, automotive, medical and electronics programs without rebuilding its quality system for each one.

- 2Automotive and EVIATF 16949 aligned process control.

Common mistakes when sourcing CNC machining in China
The first mistake is comparing unit prices without comparing scope. One quote includes material certification and full inspection, another assumes the buyer supplies stock. The gap is often larger than the price difference itself.
The second is sending a STEP file with no tolerance callouts. The shop then machines to the model and applies a general tolerance block. Critical fits come back loose or tight, and the fix costs a second setup plus shipping.
The third is choosing a supplier by machine count alone. Twenty 3-axis mills cannot produce a contoured impeller that one 5-axis center cuts in a single setup. Read the machine list against your feature list.
The fourth is ignoring finishing lead time. Hardcoat anodizing, electroless nickel and powder coating each add queue time and can shift dimensions. Plan the finishing step into the schedule instead of discovering it after machining.
- 1Compare scope, not priceMaterial, finishing and inspection change the number.
- 2Annotate the drawingPer-feature tolerance beats a general block.
- 3Check the machine listMatch axis count and travel to your geometry.
How to qualify a CNC supplier in five steps
Run these in order. Each step filters out a different failure mode.
- 1Send the drawing with tolerance calloutsInclude material grade, finish spec and datum scheme. Ask for a DFM note on thin walls under 1.5 mm and pockets deeper than 4× the tool diameter.
- 2Request a per-feature tolerance reviewAsk which dimensions hold ±0.005 mm, which relax to ±0.02 mm, and why. A supplier who answers with feature names is reading the model.
- 3Confirm machine and travel fitState the largest envelope. For parts up to 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm, confirm the machine and the workholding before the quote is fixed.
- 4Fix the inspection planAgree on 100% inspection before shipment, raw material check and in-process monitoring. Ask for the report format before the first article.
- 5Sign the NDA and lock the scheduleUse an NDA for production drawings, then confirm the 24-hour production start and the 3–5 day shipping window in writing.
Questions buyers ask about CNC machining in China
What tolerance can I expect from a Chinese CNC shop?
±0.005 mm is realistic on rigid features with good datum access, cut in one or two setups. Thin walls, deep bores and long unsupported sections usually relax to ±0.02 mm or wider.
Send the drawing and ask for the tolerance per feature. A single number quoted for the whole part is a warning sign.
How fast can a prototype be delivered?
Standard path: quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours, production start within 24 hours after approval, parts shipping in 3–5 days.
Add time for finishing. Hardcoat anodizing, plating and powder coating each carry their own queue.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No minimum order quantity. One prototype and a 10,000+ part run use the same process plan, which keeps the first article representative of production.
Ask whether setup is charged separately so the unit price comparison stays honest.
Which certifications should I ask for?
ISO 9001:2015 for general quality, IATF 16949:2016 for automotive, ISO 13485:2016 for medical devices, ISO 27001:2022 for information security.
Match the certificate to your industry. A general ISO 9001 shop is fine for brackets, not for an implant housing.
What materials are commonly machined?
Aluminum 6061-T6, 7075 and 6082; stainless 303, 316L and 17-4PH; steel 1045, 4140 and 4340; titanium TC4; Inconel; and plastics such as POM, PEEK, PC and ABS.
Material choice changes feeds, tooling and sometimes the machine. Confirm it during the DFM step.
How is my design kept confidential?
Uploads are access-controlled and treated as confidential. An NDA is available on request before production drawings are shared.
Ask how files are stored and who can open them. The answer tells you more than the certificate list.
